As we ignite our impact together in 2025, we are guided by a shared ethos of service within the Youth Development and non-profit sector. Now more than ever, we are committed to ensuring young people are empowered as agents of opportunity and change in their communities. Inspired by the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we begin the year with a focus on Meaningful Youth-Led Service Learning—an important cornerstone to cultivating purpose-driven leadership. Together, let’s build the skill as we fuel the Head, Heart, and Hands of youth and ourselves, shaping an inclusive and bright future through service.

Build the Skill:
Youth-Led Community Service Learning
- Community Mapping: Lead youth through a structured neighborhood walk with observation guides. Have them photograph community assets and areas for improvement, then create a visual map with potential service opportunities.
- Project Planning Teams: Organize youth into 3-4 person “Impact Teams” with rotating roles (researcher, outreach, documentation). Give each team a planning template and 2 weeks to develop project proposals.
- Reflection Routine: Implement “Head, Heart, Hands” reflection after each service activity – what they learned (head), how they felt (heart), and what actions they’ll take next (hands) using a simple documentation board.
- Surface Service: Running one-off service projects without context – instead, create project sequences where youth research issues, plan responses, and track impact over time.
- Adult Agenda: Selecting service projects without youth input – develop a youth survey system to identify causes they care about and let them lead the project selection process.
Service-Learning Experience Toolkit:
This gives you the option to choose a week-long, month-long, or semester-long service-learning experience with your students.
